UK DIRECT RULE IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS
Britain imposed a direct rule on its overseas territory of Turks and Caicos in the aftermath of corruption claims against the territory's local government.
Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister, Chris Bryant, instructed the London-appointed Governor to suspend the ministerial government and the House of Assembly.
As per information published on the Foreign Office web site Gordon Wetherell, the Governor of Turks & Caicos Islands said: "Our goal is to make a clean break from the mistakes of the past by establishing a durable path towards good governance, sound financial management and sustainable development."
The Turks and Caicos is an overseas U.K. territory. The islands form the south-eastern extremity of the Bahamas chain and lie 90 miles north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and 575 miles south-east of Miami (a 75 minute flight from Miami). The 23,000 residents of the islands are British citizens.
The Turks and Caicos is a popular tourist destination and a major tax haven.
